Scotland is a country with a diverse linguistic heritage, influenced by a mixture of both Germanic and Celtic languages. Today, the three primary languages spoken in Scotland are Scottish English, (Lowland) Scots, and Scottish Gaelic. Scottish Gaelic even spread across the Atlantic, where it took root in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. After mixing with the languages of the early French pioneers and indigenous First Nations people, Scottish Gaelic transformed into the unique dialect that is Canadian Gaelic.
